For the 1997 model year Dodge released their redesign 2nd-generation "Baby Ram" Dakota truck, a mid-sized model that now featured the "semi-truck" front end styling that appeared on the full-sized Dodge truck line.
The pictured model is the Club Cab 4 Wheel Drive version, which rode on a 131-inch wheelbase and fitted with a 6.5-foot cargo bed. Standard engine was the 3.9 liter Magnum V6 with 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive.
A NV231 transfer case split the power between the front and rear wheels, and new for '97 was rand-and-pinion steering. For off-road capabilities there was independent front suspension with 7.6-inches of front ground clearance. With a six passenger capacity, this mid-sized 4x4 rig was a capable truck for its size.
